About Me
Graphic Designer and Visual Storyteller.
Karmen Hakvoort
Bachelor of Design
Growing up the daughter of a photographer and a painter, I have always had a great interest in the creative sector. After graduating high school, followed by a self-orienting gap year, I started Image and Media Technology at the University of the Arts in Utrecht. This is where my love for design and branding was born. Due to this broad and experimental education, I am always eager to try new things and to integrate different techniques into my projects.
Serious about graphic design, inspired by photography, challenged by moving image and ever excited to create.

Experience
Community Manager at Spaces
2022 - 2023In my role current as a Community Manager, I am responsible for a variety of tasks that have helped me improve my skills in both leadership and teamwork. From being the first point of contact for clients to handling building management, I manage to handle a wide array of responsibilities.
What sets my experience apart in this role is the unique angle I've been able to bring in by incorporating my background in design. I took the initiative to oversee the marketing and promotional aspects for community events within the company. This allowed me to creatively blend the community manager function with a design-centric approach; resulting in a more engaging and visually appealing experience for our community members.
Community Associate at Regus
2020 - 2022After graduating, I first made the transition to the role of Community Associate at Regus, a brand of the International Workplace Group.
As I stepped into this function, I found myself handling tasks that I had no prior experience in, such as direct customer interaction, clerical tasks, and IT assistance. I was given a valuable learning opportunity, allowing me to gain proficiency in these areas. Taking on this position, I was able to embrace this range of responsibilities that have significantly expanded my skill set.
Brand Design Intern at SNOW DONUTS
2019During my internship at packaging design studio Snowdonuts, I had the opportunity to apply the strategic insights I gained from my minor in Marketing and Design. Working on a wide number of projects allowed me to integrate my understanding of marketing trends, consumer behaviour and branding into the design process.
The hands-on experience was extremely motivating and demonstrated how a well-rounded understanding of both design and marketing can lead to successful, impactful projects that do not only catch the eye, but also drive consumer engagement.
Education
Bachelor of Design at HKU Art Academy
2016 - 2020My education in Image & Media Technology has been a transformative journey for me as a beginning designer. The program's emphasis on experimentation and its broad scope have taught me not to fear trying out new approaches and to integrate new techniques.
Throughout the study I was constantly pushed to step out of my comfort zone and incorporate diverse methods into my making processes. This mindset has proven to be key as I work on improving my skills; always ready to embrace new ideas and solutions.
Minor ‘How to Create Killer Content’ - Marketing & Design
Completing a minor in marketing and design has certainly been invaluable in shaping my perspective on project development, campaign creation and (packaging) design. It allowed me to understand the role that strategy and client behaviour play in creating a successful product.
The program focused on the importance of market research, consumer psychology and competitive analysis, and how these elements inform design choices to create effective and compelling solutions. This additional education has enabled me to not just focus on aesthetics, but also service a functional purpose tailored to specific consumer needs.
